In this one-hour workshop class, students will get a basic overview of how stop motion animation works, and learn how to shoot an animated film using a free stop motion app on a smartphone or tablet. We will explore basic differences between clay, puppets, and people as animated objects and I will demonstrate and discuss simple topics like framerate. At the end of the hour, students will be ready to begin making their own experimental stop motion animations using the free app, and well...
Students will learn how stop motion works and how to animate a single object on the screen.
I think stop motion is an excellent combination of the arts, science, math, and technology. As an art form, it is accessible and approachable to anyone, regardless of background knowledge. I have been making stop-motion animated films for nearly thirty years, starting when I was a middle school student. I currently run The Wolfbird studios, a learning-focused animation and interactive media studio. The most recent stop motion animation, created in collaboration with a dance professor at a nearby university, is currently on the festival circuit and has already started winning awards: most recently Best Experimental Film at the Frostbite International Online Film Festival.
There is no homework assigned before or after this single session class.
Students have the OPTION to download the free version of Stop Motion Studio onto a smartphone or tablet. The app is available for iOS and Android: https://www.cateater.com/ It is NOT necessary for students to have the app for this class, as I will provide a demonstration and they can just follow along!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
In this single-session demo class, learner progress is assessed informally, and basic verbal feedback is given, based on what the learner does and what kinds of questions he or she may have.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
