We will also analyze the historical events of the time to help strengthen our foundation of understanding of what life was like in Lee's setting of the deep south during the 1930s. Lesson 1: The Individual in Society Lesson 2: Maycomb's Ways Lesson 3: The Great Depression and Social Types in the South Lesson 4: It is A Sin To Kill A Mockingbird Lesson 5: Do You Really Think So? Lesson 6: Stand Up For What's Right Lesson 7: It Ain't Right! Lesson 8: Empathy To Action and Restorative Justice We will analyze several chapters a lesson as a whole group using connection questions, assigned at the beginning of each lesson, to help guide our discussions. Learners will be provided with primary sources via slides for historical contexts and video clips for understanding of cultural context. They will be assessed via online games and assigned questions for homework. Critical feedback will be provided in response to the written analysis and written responses to connection questions. I am a passionate teacher that believes in analyzing materials from multiple lenses. I feel that my role is to assist in facilitating learning and that students bring a wealth of knowledge and alternative lens to any discussion. To that extent, my goal is to provide the learners with the historical context that will allow them to analyze the story from multiple lenses.
Learning Goals
Students will develop an understanding of To Kill A Mockingbird and the social climate that made it an American classic. They will examine the text through multiple lenses. In doing so, they will strengthen their critical thinking skills and develop a greater understanding of the role of literature in providing context for historical, social, and cultural knowledge.
