What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hours per weekClass Experience
Each week, we will learn about and attempt a new method of animation. We will be looking at flipbooks, stop animation, clay animation, line animation, and cut-outs. Each method has its own unique set of techniques that we'll study! Each class will start with an introduction to that week's style. Students will be encouraged to share their observations about the style and consider how they might incorporate those observations into a finished animation that they will design. The instructor will demonstrate how to use the materials and students will spend time designing and creating their animations. Because some students create quite elaborate animations, it is entirely possible that students will need additional time outside of class to finish their animations. However, the instructor will ensure that learners are comfortable working on their own if that happens and everyone will be encouraged to post their finished video in the classroom when it is complete. Week of March 27th: We will learn about flipbooks, which are a very early form of animation. Learners will look at and discuss some examples and then create their own. Week of April 3rd: We will learn about stop animation. Learners will look at examples and then create their own using iMovie. Week of April 10th: We will look at and describe clay animation. Learners will understand how to use the kind of clay involved. They will create a background and clay character to animate using iMovie. Week of April 24th: This week we will focus on line animation. Learners will create their own line animation by drawing each frame of their cartoon and using iMovie to record it. (we will do this on May 1st) Week of May 8th This week we will focus on line animation. Learners will create their own line animation by drawing each frame of their cartoon and using iMovie to record it. Week of May 15th Students will explore cut-out animation this week by creating a background and construction paper pieces they will move around. Learners will have ample opportunity to interact with both the instructor and other learners through discussions during our live meetings and also through responding to each other and giving each other feedback and encouragement in classroom posts as we post the videos of our finished animations.
Learning Goals
Learners will explore how art and technology intersect by creating a variety of animations using different materials.
