What's included
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Practice homework will be provided along with an answer key for checking their answers. I always include every step in my answer keys, so students and parents can see where any errors were made.Class Experience
US Grade 7 - 10
In this class, students will learn more about working with rational expressions (algebraic fractions) including adding and subtracting a variety of expressions and solving equations with rational expressions. Week 1: Adding and Subtracting Rational Expressions with Common Denominators Week 2: Adding and Subtracting Rational Expressions with Different Denominators Week 3: Adding and Subtracting Rational Expressions with Binomial Denominators Week 4: Solving Equations Involving Rational Expressions A video will be posted at the beginning of each week. Students should have paper and pencil while watching the videos as time will be added within the video to complete practice problems. A discussion question will be posted in the classroom each week and students will be encouraged to join in the discussion by answering the question(s) and replying to other students. I will also be participating in the discussion. Math articles may also be used occasionally to facilitate class discussions. In addition to homework problems, a quiz will be provided each week which students can turn in for grading and feedback. A picture of the quiz can be sent to me by uploading it to my Dropbox folder through the link I will give you. You do not have to have a Dropbox account to upload the homework to my folder. I use the gradual release method of teaching: " I do, we do, you do" - First, I demonstrate how to do it (using several examples). - Next, the students do some problems along with me. - Finally, they complete some problems on their own that I will check for accuracy and give more guidance if needed. I believe repetition is the key to learning Algebra, so we do many problems together during each session until I am sure they are understanding the process. Then, when I ask them to do a problem on their own, I go over it afterward, so they can see any errors they may have made. I find that this reduces any anxiety some students have about math.
Other Details
Supply List
Because I am an author of math textbooks and resources, I will provide all practice pages/quizzes. The student(s) will only need a pencil and notebook paper. Also, a printer will be helpful (to print out the practice pages).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a Florida certified teacher who taught middle school for 10 years and I have been teaching mathematics to homeschoolers from grades k-12, both in person and online for over 2 years. I always wanted to be a teacher, and I am living the dream!
In addition, since 2008, I have been writing and publishing mathematics and English/language arts teaching resources. Therefore, I will be providing all teaching materials for my class(es) for free.
I do my best to eliminate the fear some students have of mathematics by making my lessons easy to understand with plenty of examples taught step-by-step. In fact, the reason I began writing lessons/workbooks as a teacher was because I was frustrated with the textbooks in my classroom. They were often outdated, and math textbooks often seem to leave out steps necessary for students to fully understand more advanced topics, assuming, sometimes incorrectly, that students remember all steps from a previous lesson. In addition, I encourage students to ask questions.
