Adding and Subtracting Money Amounts to Find Totals and Change 5 Day Camp

In this 5 day class, students will learn how to add prices together to be able to find a total amount spent as well as learn how to subtract from a total to know how much change is owed on a purchase. Because of this, not only will learners receive instruction and practice on money, but they will also be receiving instruction and practice on 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction. This class WILL involve some equations where regrouping is necessary. It will be helpful for your learner to have some understanding of the regrouping process. We will talk through the process throughout class, but please note this is not an introductory class to regrouping with addition and subtraction.

We will spend the first few moments of class creating a community by getting to know one another, understanding class expectations, and discussing our learning target.

The lessons will flow through the following structure:
1. Introduction of the skill of the day
2. Teacher model of the skill of the day
3. Class practice with the skill of the day
4. Individual practice of the skill of the day

We'll close our lesson out by checking in with our learning target to ensure students have understood, and students will also do a self reflection on their effort throughout the lesson!

The 5 days will follow the following schedule:
Day 1: Identifying dollars and coins: what they look like, what their values are, skip counting to add like coins together
Day 2: Adding coins up to $1.00
Day 3: Making change from $1.00
Day 4: Adding dollars and coins over $1.00
Day 5: Making change from totals greater than $1.00
