Acting 101 - An Introduction to Acting

In this class, students will develop a basic understanding of acting and skillset to utilize for a monologue, scene work, or full length play. At the end, they will be able to execute warm ups, develop a character and perform a monologue.

Homework
2-4 hours per week. Because this is a short term class, there will be formal homework assignments. The assignments are imperative to the students' learning and will be used in the following lesson each day. All homework assignments will be due the day before our next meeting by 9:00 PM Central Time to ensure material is appropriate. This should be submitted through the Outschool Messaging System.
Assessment
The learner's progress will be assessed through execution of in class activities and homework assignments. Assessment is given in the form of feedback or notes.

Class Experience

Each class is an hour long and will consist of lecture, and classroom activities that involve student interaction.  Students will be expected to speak, take notes, engage and participate throughout the class. The class schedule below includes what we will discuss each day, as well as the homework assignments. Homework assignments are due the day before your scheduled class before 9:00 PM Central, Don’t worry, the assignments are fun and shouldn't take much time to complete! On our last day together, students will perform the monologues they have worked on over the past few weeks. 


Week 1 - Connecting the Mind, Body and Voice

- How to choose a monologue

Homework: Choose a monologue that is suitable for you. Make sure you have a copy of it printed out or written down. Very short. About a minute or two long. 


Week 2 - My 1st Monologue 
- How to mark beats
- How to use action verbs 
- How to rehearse 
- Class Activity 
Homework: Mark your beats, and action verbs throughout your monologue and rehearse with these using rehearsal techniques discussed in class. Upload a picture of your marked script! 

Week 3 - Learning to Act 
- Developing a character 
- Stan the Man
- GOTE Sheet  
- Class Activity 
Homework: Rehearse monologues for class performance and turn in your GOTE sheet. 

Week 4 - The Moment Before 
- What is the moment before? 
- What is the conflict?
- What’s at stake? 
- Rehearsal Time

Learning Goals

At the end of this class, students should be able to: warm up their mind, body, and voice, choose and perform monologues that showcase their talents, develop a character, and utilize a GOTE sheet. Through lecture, class discussion and activities, they will have developed a basic understanding of acting, whether that be for a monologue, scene work, or full length play.

Greetings and thank you for exploring my profile! I am a dedicated professional, currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Directing at the University of New Orleans, coupled with a Bachelors of Science  Speech Communication with an emphasis in Theatre from Jackson State University. 

As a working theatre artist, my teaching expertise covers acting, playwrighting, directing, scene work, public speaking, movement & dance, creative dramatics, devised theatre, theatre history, and social justice theatre. With diverse teaching experience, both in-person and online via Zoom, I've worked with youth, teens, and adults.
