3 in-class hoursClass Experience
A Wind in the Door Book Club will meet once a week for 4 weeks. This classic children's book has themes that tackle individuality, good vs. evil, love conquers all. Readers will be asked to read closely (approximately 50 pages a week), using a notebook or sticky notes to note certain parts of the text that they would like to share during Book Club. As the facilitator, I will have a number of conversation starters ("Why was Meg smart in a way that her teachers didn't understand?"; "What are different ways people can be smart?") The book club structure is intended to engender an excitement and love of reading in a democratic setting. Students will learn a basic 'socratic' style discussion, whereby they listen to the person speaking before them and either agree or disagree and adding their point of view. Readers are taught critical and individual thinking and there are no wrong answers.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to participate in a discussion around a topic, in this case, sections of A Wind in the Door. They will learn how to present their ideas and also how to build off the ideas of others. Certain key vocabulary, i.e. setting, characters, theme, etc., will be used. Students will learn to dive deeply into 'story'; develop analytical skills and look closely at author's purpose. It is also an opportunity for them to develop a sense of themselves and their beliefs and values.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a child, I read this book and it changed my life. Having a belief in the power of books to open your heart and mind, I have been a passionate reader ever since I was a child and my father and I had our own 'book club'. I have taught in schools for 12 years, 3 years as a 4th grade language arts teacher. I currently teach homeschoolers language arts and am always so thrilled to nurture a love for 'story', both as readers and writers.
