Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Come fall in love with this classic story as we read and discuss the timeless, and heartwarming adventures of Heidi in this 6 week book club!

When five-year-old orphan Heidi is sent to live in the Swiss Alps with a grumpy Grandfather she’s never met, the rest of the village takes pity on her. But Heidi soon discovers that her grandfather is gentle and kind behind his scowl. Heidi loves her new life running wild in the mountains with the goats, the flowers and her best friend Peter. But one day, Heidi is forced to move far away to the soot and smoke of Frankfurt to be a companion to an unwell girl. Heidi longs for her grandfather and her mountain, and grows more and more homesick every day. Will she ever return to her true home in the mountains?

Heidi, by Johanna Spyri, is one of the best-selling books ever written and continues to touch the hearts of readers of all ages. I can’t wait to share with your students this delightful classic!

In this multi-day class, we will meet once weekly for 6 weeks to dive deep. During class time, full participation in class discussion is expected. There is grace for a shy student, of course, but students will be encouraged to dive into the discussion as they acclimate to the group. Each student will have a turn to share their thoughts and ideas. I will have questions and discussion prompts ready each week, should conversation lag. After our discussion time, we will end with a game if time permits! My book clubs are typically highly engaging, highly interactive, very lively!

Chapters will be assigned to be read ahead of time, before class. There are 23 chapters in this book. The book is also available as an audiobook! All of class time will be dedicated to discussing the books, applying critical thinking, discussing characters, plot, and other literary aspects, designing a book cover, and ending with a fun game, all related to the book. Snacks are always welcome!

Parental Guidance
It is not my style to glorify the scary or darker aspects of any story. I prefer to focus on, and to keep our class discussions focused on the positive life lessons. We do, however, briefly and tactfully touch on the darker topics, such as deaths of characters, and unkindness in this story. I make every attempt to model and teach critical thinking, regardless of what book we are reading. Ms. Carol has a PhD in pedagogy and history, with a Master’s in Cultural Studies. One of my core values is to teach children to think critically, and to apply that to everything they read.
Supply List
Students will need a copy of the book Heidi by Johanna Spyri. The assigned chapters must be read or listened to BEFORE class. Students can use their own books, library books, ebooks, or even listen to the audio books. If listening to the audiobooks, it is highly recommended that student reads independently to develop their own reading comprehension and competency.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
