Class Experience

This course will cover the math topics that are often taught at the 7th grade level. However, not all students are at the same level at the same time. Therefore this course is for any grade or age of student that needs to relearn or review 7th grade math skills including introduction to pre-algebra.

Each student will receive a Google Slide presentation that they will use to practice and take quizzes and assessments. Every class we will use the slides for learning and as a way for students to interact with me in and out of class. The beginning of each class will be a review of previously learned material. Followed by teaching the new material of the week. Then, practicing the new material as a class and individually. New for my summer classes I am adding Kahoot! as a weekly review activity. Students will need to sign up for a free account to participate.

My teaching philosophy is that students learn the best when they are engaged and having fun. I spend a few minutes at the beginning of each class to get to know my students and for them to get to know me. I feel that this creates a bond of trust that helps make learning more fun and personalized. I try to make my teaching and practice questions relate to the students' lives and interests.

7th grade math topics covered in this class:
Topic 1: Integers
Topic 2: Rational Numbers
Topic 3: Expressions and Equations
Topic 4: Inequalities
Topic 5: Ratios and Proportions
Topic 6: Percent
Topic 7: Constructions and Scale Drawings
Topic 8: Circles and Area
Topic 9: Surface Area and Volume
Topic 10: Probability and Statistics

*** Some of the topics may take more or less time depending on students' levels. Therefore, we may not get to some of the later topics. ***

*** If students are not quite ready for this class, need extra practice, or are too advanced for the course, I will contact parents with optional ways we can adjust to their needs. ***

Learning Goals

The goal of this course is to give students the tools and confidence in 7th grade math skills to be able to enter 8th grade prepared to be successful.

Hello, my name is Shanin Hamilton. I am a mom of 3 kids 29, 27, and 18. I have lived on a small, hobby farm most of my life, since 1980, and we have had almost all of the different farm animals at some point. I homeschooled my oldest two kids from primary school thru high school graduation, greatest experience ever! I was a Girl Scout Leader for almost 20 years and have led hundreds of girls and other Leaders. I am also a trained K-8 teacher and have worked with students from 2 years old to 18 years old in both regular education and special education.

I have a Bachelor of Art in K-8 Interdisciplinary Studies. I have worked with students, ages 2 - 18, in multiple different settings including public schools, private daycares, Girl Scouts, and homeschooling my own children from primary school through high school graduation. I have worked as a Teachers' Aid in a 6-8th grade building in all core classes including 6-8th grade math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geography, Civics, Life Science, and ELA. As a Teacher's Aid, my job was to pull small groups of students and reteach the concepts that were taught by the teacher, but in a easier to understand way for the students that struggled with the concepts. I also worked closely with the teachers to develop class curriculum for both the whole class and for struggling learners. I have over 10 years of experience working with children with both special learning and behavioral needs in a public classroom setting.

My style of teaching is being flexible and fun. That means I let the students’ enthusiasm in the subject drive the lessons, because I believe that kids learn best when they enjoy the topic and can be engaged. I use lots of pictures, slides, games, and student driven discussions.

The classes that I offer are the core math, science, and language arts as well as some creative writing, online tools and organization classes.

I hope to see you, or your child, in my classroom soon! Have a marvelous day.
