US Grade 5
Welcome to fifth grade math! This series of 4 classes (Fall, Winter I, Winter II, & Spring,) can be used as your student's sole math course for their year or as a supplement to another math class or curriculum. Students should have successfully completed a fourth grade math course. We will work through the Singapore Math Curriculum which is aligned with the Common Core math standards. In addition to Singapore Math, this class will utilize other activities and strategies to teach math such as number talks to improve student number sense, games, and projects which will incorporate older material with what we are currently learning. My teaching style is "I do, we do, you do" through this method, I will guide student learning to meet each student where they are at and differentiate their learning. Our classes become small families. It is important for students to come to class ready to participate in their learning with their cameras on and limited distractions around them. Here is a sample schedule of our class. I will adapt this schedule to fit the needs of the learners in each section. Weeks 1 - 2 Multiplication of Fractions -multiply whole numbers by fractions -word problems involving multiplying fractions -multiply fraction by a unit fraction -multiply fraction by fractions -multiply mixed numbers Weeks 3 - 4 Division of Fractions -dividing a unit fraction by a whole number -divide fraction by a whole number -divide a whole number by a fraction -divide a whole number by a fraction -multi-step word problems dividing fractions Weeks 5 - 6 Measurement -convert measurements of length, width, volume, or time -area of rectangles with fractions -area of triangle -area of complex figures composed of rectangles and triangles Weeks 7 - 8 -cubic units -finding volume of cuboids -finding volume of complex solid figures -relate volume to capacity
