This class will introduce students to Scratch block coding and basic animation concepts. Emphasis will be put on key frames, character design and character acting, and fluid and impactful motions when animating.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Intro to Scratch
Students will learn fundamental functions and controls in Scratch. Students MUST join Day 1 to familiarize themselves with the program to participate in Day 2 and 3.
Lesson 2
SONIC: Squash-and-Stretch & Frame Count
Students will create a running Sonic. They will learn how to code fluid motions and make things look believable.
Lesson 3
MINECRAFT STEVE: Animation and Background Integration
Students will animate Minecraft Steve block breaking and placement for interaction with the setting/ background.
This class will introduce beginners to coding and animation by working with a block-code based format to understand the fundamentals of coding. Students can develop the skills gained in this class to make more detailed works in animation of a greater scale with complexity of their characters and set pieces. Through learning storyboarding and animation with Scratch, they can author things like interactive “choose your own adventure” books, visual novels, story-based games, or short cartoons!
Teacher Brittany is a professional artist and illustrator.  She holds a BA in Arts with a concentration on Visual Technology.  She also gained valuable industry experience as Technology Lead and Animation Instructor at art schools. She has worked as a freelance concept artist and illustrator in game design. She utilizes a background in comics, storyboarding and animation to bring creative concepts to life. With a strong background in traditional and digital painting, Brittany is currently teaching a wide variety of classes in various mediums to merge her love for illustration, painting and game development.

An E-Certificate of Completion with grades will be provided for learners who have completed all weeks of the class. For learners who miss more than 3 times during the course, no certificate will be offered.
Hardware: Students will need two devices. One will be used to view the class on Outschool (can be a phone) and the other device will be needed to code. The second device must have a keyboard.
Software: Scratch (in browser with account or free desktop download)
Students are encouraged to create a Scratch browser account (https://scratch.mit.edu) beforehand or download the desktop version and get comfortable with locating and opening the program to get ready for the first class. It is recommended that students create a folder for saving projects onto their computers or thumbdrives for use as a "backup" instead of saving projects online only.
