Class Experience

In this class, learners will be engaged in interactive, video game-themed lessons that focus on strengthening learners' math skills in second grade math content while having fun defeating Mario's and Sonic's enemies.

Each lesson has a variety of questions that allow students to review core mathematical skills through problem solving. These math questions focus on:
* Addition
* Subtraction
* Place Value
* Time
* Money
* Word Problems
* Fractions
* Measurement
* Geometry

This class is structured to include an ice breaker, warm up activity, a series of math questions based Mario and Sonic characters, and a final challenge all tied together with a Super Mario and Sonic theme. Learners will have opportunities to play math games, solve math problems, explain their thinking to the class, and have a lot of fun while doing it.

This class builds the foundational mathematical understandings learned in first grade and gives learners opportunities to practice second grade math skills in a fun and engaging format.

All math skills listed above will appear in the math games and problems every week. Each week will have one or two focus skills that will be found in multiple games and problems.

Below are the focus skills for each week:
* Week 1 - Addition and Subtraction Strategies, Word Problems
* Week 2 - Place Value
* Week 3 - 2 Step Word Problems, Addition and Subtraction Strategies
* Week 4 - Place Value, Double & Triple Digit Addition and Subtraction

This class is great for the following types of learners:
* learners in second grade who enjoy math and just want a fun way to play with numbers and math concepts
* learners in second grade who just need some extra practice to keep their skills strong
* learners in first grade with some advanced math skills who could use a challenge
* learners in third grade who need some extra review and practice on second grade skills

This class is not a good fit for learners younger than first grade as it requires some deeper mathematical understandings and thinking skills not typically found in younger students. Since this class is a review class looking to keep skills sharp, learners should have had exposure to a second grade math curriculum prior to this class.

Learners should feel free to wear their favorite Super Mario or Sonic shirt, hat, etc. (or other video game merch). Mr. Meurer will be there with his Mario hat on for sure!
Learning Goals
Learners will strengthen their second grade math skills by showing an ability to:
* use fact fluency strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems
* solve word problems with a missing sum or addend
* compare numbers using place value concepts
* read an analog clock to the nearest quarter hour
* count combinations of coins within 99 cents
* identify different geometric shapes
* read a ruler to the nearest half inch
* identify fractions including halves and fourths

If you’re tired of your child struggling with math concepts ….

If you’ve found your child lost and overwhelmed by word problems …

If you’ve tried everything you know to get your child to learn their math facts and nothing is
working …

If you’re done with fighting with your child on having to learn math …

… then it’s time you booked a lesson with me!

Most children experience math by learning a few new skills to a shallow depth of learning, taking a test that shows some of their achievements and gaps in learning, and then moving on to the next chapter in the textbook because the teacher manual and calendar says we’re supposed to be there. In the end, those gaps in learning are never filled in, and your child’s struggle only grows larger.

The problem most children have with math is not that they can’t understand it. It’s that teachers are often not speaking and teaching math in ways to which children can relate and they rarely go back and address learning gaps. Over time, teachers just keep reteaching the new math skills that your child struggles with and never dig deeper and uncover the learning gaps in the prerequisite skills that your child is missing and teach those.

But that’s exactly what your child likely needs.

They need a trained, dedicated, and caring teacher who understands elementary math concepts across the K-5 spectrum, knows how to assess and uncover learning gaps, and then teaches the specific math skills your child needs in a fun, engaging way so your child builds lifelong understanding.

Hello families! I'm B.J. Meurer, and in the 25+ years I’ve spent teaching grades K-5, this is precisely how I’ve helped my students achieve math success over and over again!

I’ve been teaching online for some time now, and if you read my reviews, here’s some of what you’ll find parents saying:

"We are so grateful to have Mr. Meurer as our child’s tutor. He is very knowledgeable with a lively personality that encourages engagement. He really understands the strengths and the areas of opportunities of your child and customize every session to reinforce the skills needed to succeed. My child enjoys every minute of his session and this is positively reflecting on her grades."

"I love the attention and love Mr. Meurer has poured into this class. He pays attention to each child to ensure that they're really understanding the subject and is so warm and encouraging. My child loves this class and was so excited to hear he got to go to another Mario Math class."

"This was such a fun class for my kid. He was laughing and learning the whole time. The teacher was kind, patient, and engaging and helped him cement some math concepts my kid has struggled with."

I love watching light bulbs go on in students’ minds during a lesson when they have a breakthrough moment with a math problem and start realizing they can do math! Empowering kids with the tools they need to be successful learners now and in the future is what it is all about!

I’ve seen this happen for so many of my students no matter what challenges they faced - students with special needs, students with ADHD, students with Autism, English language learners, students who struggle with reading, writing, and mathematics. I’ve also spent plenty of time working with students who have more advanced mathematical abilities and who need more challenging math work.

I’ve done this in every role I’ve held as an educator - K-5 teacher, elementary math/science supervisor, elementary school assistant principal, elementary school principal, online ESL teacher, and online math teacher.

I love teaching children and strive to impart my love of learning to them! My first priority in any class is to build strong, caring, and trusting relationships with and among my students. Learning is maximized when relationships are placed first.

Learning should be fun and playful! Even challenging concepts and topics can be fun to learn when taught with stories, characters, funny voices and hats, and a whole lot of humor. I am a trained storyteller and absolutely love using storytelling in my classes to help students learn.

Nothing motivates me more than helping students who feel stuck and defeated realize that they have what it takes to overcome a learning challenge. Mistakes are welcomed and provide an excellent way to learn even more.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my wife and 8 children reading, camping, swimming, gardening, drawing, taking homeschool field trips, and playing games together.

Please feel free to book a class or even send a schedule request for a class! I am happy to try and do my best to list a section that fits with your schedule needs.
