每週 2-4 小時. Students will be assigned reading each week to be completed before the next class. Assigned reading will be 40 to 100 pages per week, and the amount of time it takes depends upon the individual reader. Students may also use audiobooks and follow along in a print book. Students will also be encouraged to complete a Theme Collage to present during our final class session. Students will be asked to create a Playlist to share during our 5th and 8th class sessions.

Informal assessment via discussion and student interaction, and presentation of the Theme Collage. Students who need a formal grade for home school may submit the Theme Collage and Playlist for a grade to be considered with their participation in each class discussion and activity.

What a timely novel study!  In a crazy world that is encountering political, racial, and social unrest, this novel study provides students a lens through which to see how the unrest impacts people from inside of the experience.  The Hate U Give is a novel about the aftermath of a young black man being killed by law enforcement and the impact his death has on the only witness, family, friends, community and law enforcement.  
Students will read assigned chapters before each session, and then during the class we will discuss and analyze the reading using interactive tools and strategies. Slides and lecture will also be used, along with interactive tools and activities.
* Readings will be assigned by chapter and include 40-100 pages per week to be read outside of class.  
* A guided reading sheet will be provided for note taking and meaningful quotes to share during class.
* Poetry and music are integral aspects of the novel, and students will be encouraged to share music and poetry meaningful to them, as well as listening to clips from songs included in the book during class. Students will make their own playlist based upon their interpretation of the novel.
* Students will complete a Theme Collage to present during our final class session.  Theme will be discussed during each class session and the guided reading documents will support the creation of a Theme Collage. 

Discussion and interaction are required elements of this class and students are STRONGLY urged to use their cameras and microphones in order to receive the full benefits of this class.

Outschool has recently changed its policy regarding class cancellations. We know how disappointing canceled classes can be for learners, so we too are amending our policy.  In the past we have waited for late enrollees, of which we have had MANY!  Unfortunately we can no longer do that. 

Instead we will evaluate class enrollment for ongoing classes on teach Sunday at 5pm Eastern.  IF enrollment falls below 3 students, we will push the class back a week.  When other sections are available students will have the option to transfer to another class.  Full refunds will be provided for learners who cannot attend the newly scheduled class time. Partial refunds for missed classes are NOT available. If a student must miss class, the recording is available to view at their convenience. All other refunds will be provided as per the Outschool Limited Refund policy (see below).  If for any reason the class does not meet your expectation, you have the confidence of knowing that Outschool has a Happiness Guarantee and will provide a refund upon request via their Customer Support. 

Transfer requests within 24 hours of a scheduled class will NOT be approved.  At that point it is too late to reschedule the class, and it is unfair to other families who may have enrolled thinking there were multiple learners enrolled. Instead students will be encouraged to watch the video of the class.

Week 1 - Intro to the book, author, vocabulary, social just topics, connection to current events, uses of appropriate vs. inappropriate language for class, assignments and discussion. Icebreaker and determination of prior knowledge. Watch a clip from Fresh Prince to prepare students for the pop culture references.

Week 2 - Read Chapters 1-5 (pages 1-92) Class discussion of the chapters read, sharing of meaningful quotes from guided reading, Listen to Tupac's song from chapter 1 and discuss the meaning of THUG LIFE, complete the Rose from Concrete Activity

Week 3 - Read Chapters 6-10 (pages 93-181) Class discussion of the chapters read, sharing of meaningful quotes from guided reading, introduce the Playlist assignment and guided worksheets for the first assignment in week 5. Examine Starr's code-switching. 

Week 4 - Read Chapters 11-13 (pages 182-239) Class discussion of the chapters read, sharing of meaningful quotes from guided reading, character sketches, bring and share a poem that is meaningful.

Week 5 - Read Chapters 14-15 (pages 240-278) Create and present a playlist based upon their interpretation of the first part of the novel. Class discussion of the chapters read, sharing of meaningful quotes from guided reading.

Week 6 - Read Chapters 16-20 (pages 279-349) Class discussion of the chapters read, sharing of meaningful quotes from guided reading, review the plot structure of the novel, introduce plot diagram to be completed for the next class. 

Week 7 - Read Chapters 21-26 (pages 353-444) Sharing of meaningful quotes from guided reading. Share plot diagrams, discuss symbols/motif/irony/metaphor, analyze how The Fresh Prince and Harry Potter mirror Starr's life. 

Week 8 - Wrap up the novel study and present Theme Collages  and final playlists to the class. Discuss real world implications of gun violence, police brutality, protest movements, freedom of speech.

Compare the identities between which Starr feels torn, noting important figures in her life who pull her away from or toward one side.

Discuss real-world implications of gun violence and police brutality, with the sensitive nature of these issues in mind.

Consider how Starr’s beloved franchises—Harry Potter and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air—mirror her experiences.

Prepare their own playlist that reflects their interpretation of the novel and characters.

Creation of a Theme Collage that examines and articulates the student's understanding of the keys themes.

The content is racially charged and includes violence and profanity. This is a class in which only mature students who are ready to discuss and analyze the literature and social implications should enroll. The N-word and the F-word are included in the text. I realize that this book has very sensitive content and am prepared to tackle it with sensitivity. I am using the skills and knowledge acquired from classes I have taught using Night by Elie Wiesel and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and use of resources from Facing History to assist with this approach to teaching intolerance. I have several years of experience teaching in a traditional classroom setting consisting of students from differing races and socio-economic backgrounds.

As a National Board Certified Teacher, I have taught several novels with themes of intolerance for several years.  My experience as a Holocaust trained educator lends itself to the approach I take to be honest, historically accurate, but sensitive to the controversial topics in the novel.  A conversation will be held about the "N-word", how and why is was used and why it is denigrating and derogatory.  Students will be directed that the only time it is appropriate to actually say the N-word or the F-word is when they are reading a quote from the novel, otherwise it should be referred to as the N-word and F-word. 

First and foremost is the analysis of literature and utilizing higher thinking skills to examine the text, then the social implications of the text in a historical timeline and societal constraints.  Emphasis is placed on the literature, the sensitive topics are a vehicle students find interesting and compelling enough to read and discuss.
