After each class a home practice sheet and a roll and read will be sent home along with the passage that was read in class. It is up to the parent to decide if they would like to work on these activities outside of class. They are not required.

Welcome to Second Grade Phonics with Ms. Katelynn! In this three times a week class learners will build upon their first grade phonics knowledge and grow as readers. Each week we will work on phonemic awareness or the ability to think about and work with individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words by blending sounds into words and segmenting words into sounds. We will do visual and auditory drills to ensure that each learner can match graphemes (a letter or group of letters used to represent a sound) with their phonemes and vice versa. Learners will practice reading words in isolation as well as in sentences and short stories, practice writing and spelling words that match our phonics skill for the day, and learn irregular words, also known as high frequency words, each week through orthographic mapping. This means that learners will be pointed to the irregular part(s) of the word and discuss the unexpected grapheme-phoneme correspondences. This will ensure mastery of irregular words. A typical week will look as follows:

Week Two: Week of September 3rd  : FLSZ Rule and all,oll,ull

Week Four: Week of September 17th : Silent E
Week Five: Week of October 1st: ending -es, -ed, and -ing
Week Six: Week of October 8th: Closed and open syllables closed/closed
Week Seven: Week of October 15th : closed/closed and open/closed
Week Eight: Week of October 22nd : tch, dge, and long VCC (-ild, -old, -ind, -olt, -ost)

Week Nine: Week of October 29th: ending pattern review, ar/or/ore
Week Ten: Week of November 5th: Spelling /er/ (er,ir,ur,w+or), R-controlled review
Week Eleven: Week of November 12th: ai, ay and ee,ea,ey
Week Twelve: Week of November 19th: oa,ow,oe and ie/igh
Week Thirteen: Week of November 26th: Vowel Teams review 1 and any other needed review
Week Fourteen: Week of December 3rd: oo,u /oo/ and oo /ū/
Week Fifteen: Week of December 10th:ew,ui,ue and Vowel Teams review 2
Week Sixteen: Week of December 17th: au, aw, augh and ea

Ms. Katelynn may use Blooket as an end of the week activity. Blooket does not require an account. Students will have to be able to click on the link in the chat and type in their first name to play the games. All games will relate to the phonics topic of the week.

Ms. Katelynn is a licensed teacher and has been a teacher for the past nine years. She has experience working as an online teacher and a brick and mortar teacher. She loves teaching first grade. She is a certified special education teacher with experience working with students in kindergarten through grade five. She is currently enrolled in classes to be trained in teaching students with dyslexia. She loves to teach and share her passion for learning with her students. It is Ms. Katelynn's goal to show her students that they can be successful in the classroom and help them gain the confidence they need to do so!
