Start at any time! Come join us.

This class meets twice weekly to cover reading and writing skills for a full year's curriculum. On the first day of the week, we will cover reading topics. These will include reading comprehension skills such as asking and answering questions, retelling a story, and forming opinions about what we read. On the second day of the week, we will cover writing. This will include basic grammar such as complete sentences, parts of speech, conjugating verbs, and crafting paragraphs.

We will start with a discussion. Next, I will model the concept and guide the group in an exercise. This will lead to individual work. Some weeks will include an after-class practice assignment. Material is presented through a slideshow.


Week of December 16th: Reading: Informational text features. Writing: Identifying and using adjectives.

We will resume in January! This class will run year-round.

Week of January 13th: Reading: Main ideas and key details Writing: Descriptive Sentences
Week of January 20th: Reading: Describing a series of historical events Writing: Sequencing a paragraph
Week of January 27th: Reading: Sequencing Writing: Tying Sentences Together.
Week of February 3rd: Reading: Comparing and contrasting Two Informational Texts Writing: Write an opinion paragraph
Week of February 10th: Reading: Define Words in Context Writing: Write a narrative paragraph.
Week of February 17th: Reading: Character traits Writing: Irregular plural nouns
Week of February 24th: How a character's actions move the story Writing: Identify and use abstract nouns
Week of March 3rd: Reading: Ask and answer questions. Writing: Plural nouns
Week of March 10th: Spring Break
Week of March 17th: Reading: Understanding figurative language. Writing: Form and use simple verb tenses
Week of March 24th: Reading: more figurative language. Writing: Humorous writing prompt use idioms.
Week of March 31st: Reading: Answering questions and citing text evidence. Writing: Structuring a paragraph.
Week of April 7th: Reading: Understanding figurative language. Writing: Form and use simple verb tenses.
Week of April 14th: Reading: more figurative language. Writing: Humorous writing prompt use idioms.
Week of April 21st: Reading: Forming an opinion about a text. Writing: Expressing your opinion in a paragraph.  
Week of April 28th: Reading: Supporting your opinion with text evidence. Writing: More opinion writing.
Week of May 5th: Reading: Using context clues to answer questions about a text. Writing: Identifying and using adjectives
Week of May 12th:  Reading: Main ideas and key details Writing: Descriptive Sentences

Week of May 19th: Vacation

Week of June 23rd: Reading: How a character's actions move the story Writing: Identify and use abstract nouns

Week of June 30th: Vacation

Week of July 7th: Reading: Identify the central message. Writing: Identify and use irregular plural nouns
Week of July 14th: Reading: Understanding figurative language. Writing: Form and use simple verb tenses.
Week of July 21st: Reading: more figurative language. Writing: Past tense verbs.
Week of July 28th: Reading: Retelling a story and identifying the beginning, middle, and end. Writing: Future tense verbs.
Week of August 4th: Reading: Answering questions and citing text evidence. Writing: Structuring a paragraph.
Week of August 11th: Reading: Forming an opinion about a text. Writing: Expressing your opinion in a paragraph.
