課堂經歷
We will be dispelling myths and discussing truths about the actual pirates that sailed the Caribbean from the mid 17th century to the early 18th century. Students will gain a better understanding of the way pirates have become defined in the cultural zeitgeist through popular depictions in literature and film, and where the archetypal pirate conflicts with the reality. The majority of the class will be delivered via a PowerPoint lecture with us opening up the class to discussion at the end....
Students will learn about many of the historically inaccurate tropes associated with pirates as well as the biases behind some of the more romanticized details commonly attributed to them.
I've been working in education for several years and I have an excellent understanding of discussing potentially heavy topics that may arise from an objective perspective with respect to the age of the audience. Sensitive topics are not the emphasis of this class, but neither will they be outright ignored out of respect for historical accuracy.
In this class we will touch on the racial and ethnic prejudices of the time as concerns the English's view of African slaves as "cargo" and the ways the pirates of the time challenged, but also took part in, the slave trade. We will also discuss that while most acts of piracy at sea were bloodless by design, some pirates did kidnap skilled crew members or engage in acts of violence to extract information. (Topics like this we won't be elaborating much on as I believe it's enough to state that violent acts did take place sometimes, without emphasizing the more graphic details.) Other potentially sensitive topics we may cover include the prevalence of disease on board many pirate ships due to living in close proximity and diets devoid of vitamin c, as well as their consumption of rum.

In addition to being a lifelong film and literature enthusiast, I am inescapably fascinated by the history of 17th and 18th century piracy, and I love octopus! (Fun Fact: The correct pluralization of the singular "octopus" is actually not "octopi"...
