課堂經歷
During this class we will discuss the general change from elementary to middle school. Although this is an exciting time, it can be anxiety inducing for your child. We will discuss various coping mechanisms to help navigate the turmoil of this change including the following: - Developing a sense of humor - Confidence: what it is and how to get some - The differences between blending in, fitting in, and belonging - Peaking vs growing; discovering your identity amid a bunch of influences - Technology: advantages and disadvantages, risks, and how to navigate our world online - Friends and influences (peer pressure) - Feedback, advice, and criticism As a former (very) awkward middle schooler who turned into a middle school teacher, my experiences may help put your child at ease making this transition with realistic advice and support.
學習目標
- Students will be able to explain the differences between blending in, fitting in, and belonging.
- Students will understand and discuss the world online and best practices for navigating it well.
- Students will discuss the influences around them and determine goals for discovering self-worth.
其他詳情
父母的引導和規範
We will not discuss any subjects in this class that may be considered sensitive (eg. sex, drugs, religion, gender identity, or mental health concerns such as eating disorders, depression, etc.). If these subjects are brought up by the student, I will gently refer them to their parent for discussion in the home. This course is meant to be realistic but focus on navigating the school environment only, not on major life concerns that may warrant more serious conversations.
供應清單
Students should bring a way to take notes or write down questions, but nothing more is needed.
