Children will form a concrete and abstract understanding of addition. This will be taught through the use of Montessori materials and teaching methods, such as the addition strip board and counters. In the first class, we will do basic addition using counters and we may begin to work with the addition strip board if the children are understanding the basics of addition. In the second class, we will start by going over all of the features of the addition strip board and the teacher will introduce to the students how we use it (if we didn't already do this in the first class). From there, we will begin working on simple addition equations, which the children will be doing along with me, at home, using their real or printable materials that will be sent to you once you sign up. Montessori is child-led and extremely adaptable, so the teacher will be able to follow the pace of the children. For example, if the class is understanding the basics of addition with the addition strip board very quickly, we will move on to more complicated equations. The teacher will move at the pace of the children and adapt each lesson to fit their needs.

As you can see, the classes are only 20 minutes long. This is because we are trying to imitate how the children would be treated in the Montessori environment. The teacher will be introducing the materials to them, then encouraging them to try by themselves, with the teacher still there to help if they need it. The children are then encouraged to continue to practice the materials and what they learned in class, between classes. We will start the following class by going over any difficulties that the children had while practicing by themselves, on their own time.

Prior Knowledge: Children should be able to identify all numbers by looking at the symbol (ex. 14) independently, up to 20.
