In this class, students will be introduced to working with fractions, decimals and percentages using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Time will be spent focusing on each of these individually as well as how to convert fractions into decimals and percentages, and vice versa. The goal is to demystify the relationship between the ways we think about these numbers and to be able to convert easily between them. There will be a focus on discovering ways in which we can apply fractions, decimals and percentages in everyday life to make thinking about them more accessible. We will include games like math bingo and the game 24 using fractions, decimals and percentages. This class is designed to supplement and support a student working with fourth and fifth grade math curriculum and may include some long multiplication and division review. It would also be appropriate review for a sixth grader that needs the practice and review before moving on to more advanced middle school curriculum. Students should be familiar with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers and be comfortable learning to apply these processes to fractions, decimals and percentages. We will discuss ways to approach these and students will have plenty of time to practice both mental math exercises and written work. Once we get into the flow of the class, we'll have warm-up problems from the previous class's lesson for review each week and will go over any assigned work that students have questions about before moving on to new material. I like to be approachable and flexible in order to meet the student wherever he or she is with their learning, and students can always feel comfortable asking to review or clarify steps and problems that we work on together. Overview of class: Weeks 1 & 2: understanding fractions and practice adding and subtracting common denominators, as well as multiplying simple fractions Weeks 3 & 4: practice multiplying and dividing simple fractions, simplifying fractions, mixed numbers and finding common multiples Weeks 5 & 6: continued practice with fractions, introduction to decimals and percentages Weeks 7 & 8: working with decimals and percentages, and converting from fractions and back again Weeks 9 -12: continuation, practice and progression of all the above subjects

In this class we will learn the different ways in which we can think about the parts of a whole number. We will work with fractions, decimals, and percentages by using story problems, written practice and incorporating games and puzzles, and students will learn how to convert between fractions, decimals and percentages as they become comfortable with each individually. We will also work with additional, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions and decimals. The focus will be shaped as the teacher works with the students who attend, based on where the most practice is needed.
