Finding an exercise that you enjoy when you are young helps in maintaining a healthy lifestyle as you grow older! Running is an inexpensive activity that builds a foundation for all other fitness activities. Running builds strong bones, as it is a weight bearing exercise, strengthen muscles, improve cardiovascular fitness, burns plenty of kilojoules, and helps maintain a healthy weight. Students will be able to run 3 miles at the end of the 5 week course. Students will learn the importance of taking care of their body. They will recognize that it is crucial to stretch before physical activity, the importance of cooling down, and the joy in achieving a goal!
I will provide students with a journal where they will track their runs and also note any struggles that they may have had. We will use these journals as the guide in our weekly discussion. They will also use these journals to write encouraging notes to themselves throughout the week.

Whenever students are involved in a physical fitness routine, it is very important that they stretch before and after the strenuous exercise. They should have proper footwear, a water bottle on hot days, and a way to contact home if they should trip or fall while running alone. Sprains and dehydration are possible without proper stretching and hydration.
