作業
每週 1 小時. Homework will usually be to either start learning their new song, research the show their song is from or start answering their character questions (e.g. What is the location of this song?).
評估
LAMDA Exams: Depending on students' location, it is possible to take graded LAMDA exams in MT singing but there is never any pressure for a student to take an exam! As you would expect, the grades get more challenging the higher you go (Grade 8 is the maximum). For a beginner wanting to enter their Grade 1 exam, students will be expected to perform 2 contrasting musical theatre songs and answer 2-3 questions about the character they are playing in each song. I work with the students for as long as they need on exam repertoire until they feel 100% ready to take the exam. Taking graded exams gives a huge sense of achievement to students and marks a learner's ability and skill in their craft. Non syllabus: Students not wishing to take an exam will perform an informal assessment and I will provide a progress report for parents.
等級
By request of the learner or suggestion of the teacher but never a requirement to take a graded exam.

課堂經歷

I'm a professional performer and teach musical theatre singing following the syllabus of LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art). This syllabus is very popular in the UK as it gives students a goal to work towards and has more learning opportunities than non syllabus classes - don't worry, they're still fun! All ages and abilities welcome!

In our first class I will establish what style of songs each learner likes and what songs will suit their voice and range. I will then compile a list of musical theatre songs for each student to choose new songs from. When learners start learning a song, I provide a backing track and also a guide vocal track of myself singing to the same backing so students can learn the notes by ear. Students will learn about different styles and genres of musicals from various time periods and learners will focus on their performance so they are acting and making sense of the lyrics as well as singing the right notes. Students will learn about the shows their songs are from and delve into a deeper understanding of their characters.

Each class involves:
- Warm up moves and stretches
- Fun warm up songs
- Vocal technique & pitch training
- Breath control
- Acting training
- Progression of learning new material and putting technique/performance into place.

Long term Ongoing class progression (over some months):
- Introduction to vocal anatomy and vocal folds (vocal chords).
- Introduction to breathing and breath control.
- Thick fold and thin fold singing (head voice & chest voice).
- Twang technique.
- Learning a selection of suitable songs personalised for each learner to learn at their own pace.
- Choosing our first song to work on together putting into practice all technique learned so far. This is when backing tracks will be provided.
- Researching the musical show or film the song is from.
- Answering questions on characterisation in the song.
- More advanced learners will do more detailed research of their composers and character knowledge of their pieces.
- Choosing a second song and approaching it as a monologue first to work on acting skills.
- This process continues until students have a good repertoire of material.
- Students will perform an informal assessment of 2 contracting songs from their repertoire and will need knowledge to answer some questions about their songs, the shows and their characters.
學習目標
Students will learn vocal technique, exercises to work on improving their technique and acting skills to enhance their performance and build their character in the songs they choose. Each song will be staged and learners will learn about stage terminology (Upstage, stage left, right wing etc.). They will also be learning about the musical their chosen songs are from, when they were written, by whom etc. and of course, the plot. More advanced learners will learn about certain musical composers and different eras of musical theatre on Broadway and London's West End.

Lizzie has been teaching on Outschool since the pandemic and really enjoys the international outreach she acquires teaching LAMDA. Lizzie has just returned from playing the leading lady in the West End transfer production of Top Hat the musical which was on board the Queen Victoria sailing around the world. Lizzie is currently in the process of auditioning for musicals in London and likes to teach in between being in shows.
