This summer class is designed to help rising 2nd graders solidify their 1st-grade English Language Arts (ELA) skills in reading, writing, and language arts. Meeting twice a week, students will engage in fun and interactive activities to reinforce key concepts and prevent the "summer slide," ensuring a confident transition to 2nd grade. 🌟What is Included?🌟 👩🏫🏫A certified teacher with over 20 years experience in public, private, and online schools that is passionate about helping children succeed. 📰Worksheets for your child to better understand the material 🧾A Monthly newsletter sent out the last week of each month for the upcoming month that will have the latest news of the classroom, ways to support your child at home, and upcoming skills that we will be covering in class. 📹For those that do not understand the concepts being taught in class, I will create a video for those children to watch at their convenience. 🌟This is a subscription class which means that you can join any week and suspend your enrollment on weeks that your child cannot attend.🌟 📚 Weekly Breakdown 📆Week of 6/16/25: Back to Basics ☀️Day 1: Reading: Review short vowel sounds with simple CVC words ELA: Capitalization rules (names, start of sentences) Writing: Write 3 complete sentences about their summer ☀️Day 2: Reading: Read a Level D-E story (decodable reader) ELA: Punctuation (periods, question marks) Writing: Draw & label a picture, write 2-3 sentences using punctuation 📆Week of 6/23/25: Phonics & Sentences ☀️Day 1: Reading: Long vowels with silent e (a_e, i_e) ELA: Nouns – people, places, things Writing: Write a list of nouns from a picture book ☀️Day 2: Reading: Read a story with long vowel words (level E-F) ELA: Verbs – action words Writing: Write 3 sentences using different verbs 📆Week of 6/30/25: Story Elements Day 1: Reading: Identify characters and setting ELA: Adjectives – describing words Writing: Describe a character from a story with 3 sentences ☀️Day 2: Reading: Sequencing events (first, next, last) ELA: Compound words Writing: Write 4 sentences retelling a story in order 📆Week of 7/14/25: Blends & Digraphs ☀️Day 1: Reading: Blends (bl, cl, st, gr) ELA: Matching blends to pictures Writing: Use 3 blend words in sentences ☀️Day 2: Reading: Digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh) ELA: Word sort (digraphs) Writing: Short story using 2 digraph words 📆Week of 7/21/25: Nonfiction Texts ☀️Day 1: Reading: Read a nonfiction passage ELA: Text features (headings, photos, captions) Writing: Write 3 facts learned ☀️Day 2: Reading: Main idea and 2 details ELA: Matching facts to topics Writing: Create a mini-poster with one topic and 3 facts 📆Week of 7/28/25: Sentence Writing ☀️Day 1: Reading: Focus on fluency with reader's theater ELA: Review sentence structure (subject + predicate) Writing: Write 4 complete sentences with correct grammar ☀️Day 2: Reading: Partner read a level G-H story ELA: Fix the sentence (editing practice) Writing: Write and revise their own 3-sentence paragraph 📆Week of 8/4/25: Opinion Writing ☀️Day 1: Reading: Read opinion texts (e.g., “My Favorite Pet”) ELA: Opinion signal words (because, I think, best) Writing: Write an opinion paragraph (favorite food) ☀️Day 2: Reading: Compare two short texts (dog vs cat as pets) ELA: Transition words (first, next, last) Writing: Opinion piece with reasons and transitions 📆Week of 8/11/25: Narrative Writing ☀️Day 1: Reading: Read a personal narrative (e.g., first day of school) ELA: Past tense verbs Writing: Write a short story about a fun day ☀️Day 2: Reading: Discuss feelings and reactions in stories ELA: Pronouns (he, she, it, they) Writing: Add details to their story using pronouns 📆Week of 8/18/25: Descriptive Writing & Vocabulary ☀️Day 1: Reading: Descriptive poem or sensory-rich story ELA: Sensory words (see, hear, smell, taste, feel) Writing: Write a descriptive paragraph about a place ☀️Day 2: Reading: Vocabulary in context (new words in text) ELA: Synonyms and antonyms Writing: Replace “boring” words in their paragraph with better ones 🌟This schedule is subject to change🌟
