LEARNING GOALS:
1. Students will add another 300+ Latin baseboards to the 1700+ baseboards they mastered in earlier courses.
2. Students will review previously studied grammatical concepts, including First-Fifth Noun Declensions, First-Fourth Verb Conjugations, all six Verb Tenses in the Active Indicative, First, Second, and Third Declension Adjectives , and hundreds of previously studied words.
3. Student will learn about Personal Pronouns of the First and Second Person
4. Students will learn about Personal Pronouns of the Third Person
5. Students will learn more about Demonstrative Pronouns and Adjectives
6. Students will learn about Fifth Declension Nouns
7. Students will learn about Correlative Adjectives of Place
8. Students will learn about Correlative Adverbs of Place
9. Students will develop proficiency in translating sentences, from English to Latin and Latin to English, that illustrate target grammatical concepts and vocabulary.
10. Students will develop proficiency in translating short historical and literacy passages from Latin to English using text glosses and their dictionaries as aides.
11. Students will engage in conversational Latin using the types of discussion frameworks typically taught in second year world language classes.  
12. Students will brainstorm about and investigate English words that are derived from studied Latin vocabulary.
13. Students will learn collaboratively by playing online study games to reinforce target Latin vocabulary and grammar.
I am a dedicated and creative literacy specialist with 20+ years experience working with students of all ages. In addition to teaching this Introduction to Latin course series, I also teach another popular series of courses on Outschool called Vocabulary Building with Roots and Affixes, which extends through six levels so far. As a language buff, I’ve studied Italian, Latin, German, and (to a lesser extent) French and Spanish. 

I hold permanent certification from New York State in Reading (grades K-12). I am also a certified Wilson Reading System dyslexia practitioner. I have extensive experience with Orton-Gow methods for literacy re/mediation; the foundation for that work was the introductory training I received through the Gow Teacher Training Institute. I taught Orton-Gow (Reconstructive Language) at the Gow School and the Gow School Summer Program for several years. Across more than a decade as a teacher educator and university reading center director, I helped to prepare several hundred reading teachers and literacy specialists in NY and PA. 

I completed my undergraduate degree at The Catholic University of America School of Music. My doctoral and master’s degrees were earned at the University at Buffalo School of Education, under the advisement of Dr. Michael W. Kibby, a nationally known literacy diagnostician and scholar.  I have presented my research at several national and international conferences, including Literacy Research Association, International Reading Association, and International Dyslexia Association.

HOMEWORK: Approximately 90 minutes of homework is assigned each week, involving written exercises and conversational practice designed to foster memorization. Students are welcome to schedule brief meetings with the instructor or with each other to work on these assignments. Some of these exercises will be in the textbooks and others will be designed by the instructor.

ASSESSMENT: The instructor engages in continuous informal assessment throughout the class. The class will complete numerous conversational and written activities during the class and for homework. The textbook also contains written exercises at the end of each chapter. This is a nongraded course.

— Bantam New College Latin and English Dictionary

I share notes and exercises with students in Google Docs format. The students do not need to be logged into Google accounts to access these materials and they can log into the files anonymously. I use Quizletlive study games during the class, as well. Again, students do not need to create or log onto Quizlet accounts to play these games, and they can log on anonymously.
