I am also very aware of the dangers that being online presents but when I was younger I had no idea about online safety. I had never heard of phishing, online scammers, and I definitely didn't know that people would try and steal information, cause addiction, or trick me into being unsafe. 5 lessons//5 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Media SavvyCan you tell what's real and what's not online? This class helps us learn to think critically about online media and to evaluate sources and stories.Week 2Lesson 2ScamsScams are ways people try to trick us and they are constantly changing and expanding. This class looks at some of the most common scams and how to recognize them.Week 3Lesson 3PredatorsMost people online are safe people but there are some who are not. This class looks at warning signs and reviews times that children and teens made bad decisions about who is safe online. This particular class is scary.Week 4Lesson 4Cyber BullyingBullying is always a problem but when it is online we can't escape it. It follows us home. It follows us on vacation. It can spread virally and feel overwhelming. We will talk about ways to handle cyber bullying and what is and isn't bullying.Week 5Lesson 5Gaming AddictionI love to play games and maybe you do too but is your gaming becoming more important than anything else in your life? This class helps you evaluate your gaming and rethink your priorities. You will need a paper and pencil for this lesson.
Students will become internet aware and recognize when something is unsafe. They will learn how to be good digital citizens in an increasingly digital world.

This class may be scary for some children. We will be discussing people who DO try to hurt and trick children. We will talking about people who are willing to steal, lie, and manipulate feelings and emotions with no regards that the people they are hurting are children. We will be talking about companies who are purposely trying to get children addicted to games. All of this may be very upsetting for students. The daily homework is part of processing this information. There are several videos that show children who met strangers from the internet and one about a teenager who was killed by a gaming friend. While these are scary stories they are also the reality of what this class is meant to try and prevent.
