課堂經歷
It is critical our students are actively aware of what is going on in their communities, state, country, and the world. This course is designed to encourage students to actively pay attention to the news by reading a newspaper, visiting a legitimate news website, listen to the radio, or by watching local and/or world news on TV. The course meets once a week and students may come to class prepared with a news story that they found to be particularly interesting; it could cover politics, science, the arts, medicine, economics, new historical findings, local happenings, global events, and everything in between, or may simply join and learn about current events as I will have 2-3 topics ready to go. Over time, students will see how issues evolve and be able to contextualize various topics and make connections--a vital skill for life. *The idea is to report what is currently happening in our world objectively--students will not be offering commentary or personal opinions (nor will I)--this is not a course in debate. However, they may present the sides of an argument that is making headlines to demonstrate they understand the major talking points.*
其他詳情
父母的引導和規範
Topics found in a legitimate newspaper, news website, or news channel (network or cable) are fair game. Some of the topics may include more sensitive material than others (dealing with war, genocide, etc--unfortunate realities of our world right now), so please do not enroll your learner if this will be an issue.
I always maintain an objective approach and insist the students do as well; personal politics, religion, or overall worldviews are respected, but ultimately kept out of conversation when identifying the main talking points of an issue. Again, this is not a debate class nor a place to offer personal opinion or judgment, but rather a course reporting on what is happening in our world.

I am a high school Humanities teacher and there are times where possibly sensitive topics are brought up in our reading or when talking about current events--I am no stranger to facilitating and maintaining objective & respectful dialogue amongst students.
