Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Advanced Level
Often neglected but desperately needed, direct teaching in sentence construction all the way through high school will help students stand out.

As they move through middle school and high school, their speech becomes more sophisticated as should their writing. Learners have trouble transferring the grammar knowledge they have learned in isolation, so they often struggle with sentence syntax, punctuation, and other mechanics as they go into high school. By manipulating sentence parts and learning about function and style, students put grammar to work.

Using the masters, those published, professional authors, as our models, we study the form, function, and aesthetics of sentences. This helps students write, but amazingly, it even helps them analyze literature.

This class is a two-day sample of the ongoing class, "State of the Art: Putting Grammar to Work to Write Something Beautiful" (see link below). That class continues throughout the school year. We have found that students need to be immersed in this practice with lots of repetition and instructor feedback to master these skills. Becoming competent in this area will make them stand out far and above other writers. The will be a cut above!

𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬--The back-and-forth work between a student and teacher significantly benefits a student if done well. We follow best practices in designing class time, assignments, and routines. According to Pennington Publishing, effective writing feedback (or grading) is:
• Specific, not general
• Immediate, not postponed
• Routine with a revision / feedback cycle
• Explanatory
• The right amount
• Targeted to the most critical issues
• Varied (written, audio, and video comments)
• Holding students accountable
