This 45 minute class will focus on the "D" sound using the book, The Dot, by Peter Reynolds. I will engage in an interactive story with your child. We will use magnetic pictures of items, focusing on the beginning sound and will sort the items into a sorting bag. Following the sound exploration, we will use watercolors to create a unique painting that accompanies the story, The Dot. Students will improve their understanding of the sound the letter D makes. Learning that there are predictable relationships between sounds and letters allows children to apply these relationships to both familiar and unfamiliar words, and to begin to read with fluency.
I have taught many children to read during my long successful 34 years as a teacher. 10 of those years were in first grade where reading is the fundamental goal for the entire year. I have also been an intervention teacher, focusing on phonics, comprehension, and fluency in reading.
