The Foundation in Sounds program improves auditory discrimination, auditory memory size, and auditory sequencing so that students would have the necessary skills to move into the Barton Reading & Spelling System.  During each week, the students will learn two sounds.  Sessions are short to help with attention span.  The lessons are also multisensory to improve mastery of the sounds.  It uses a strong multisensory approach to help improve a student's auditory discrimination, auditory memory size, and auditory sequencing skills which are some of the  prereading skills necessary for a student to begin any Orton-Gillingham Reading program.  Each lesson has 9 procedures.  In procedures 1, 2, and 3, your student will review what they have learned in the previous lessons with games, sequencing of Sound Pictures, and Colored Blank Tiles. In procedures 4 and 5, student will be guided into discovering new sounds.
In procedures 6 through 11, your student will practice those new sounds by doing a wide variety of activities. Your student will end each lesson by marking it off their progress tracking sheet – so they can see that they are getting closer to the finish line.  This class is best utilized with a laptop or computer.  Students will need to have basic mouse control in order to manipulate the digital tiles and cards.  If a student does not yet have these mouse skills, an adult can sit next to the student to help them with the mouse.  Each class begins with an interactive game to review previous material.  The use of photos help the students retain the key words for each sound.  A headset with a mic is also helpful so that the student can easily distinguish the sounds in class.

          Lesson 6: /i/ and /e/
          Lesson 7: /u/
          Lesson 8: /a/ and /o/
          Lesson 9: /l/ and /r/
          Lesson 10: /d/ and /t/
          Lesson 11: /ch/ and /j/
          Lesson 12: /b/ and /p/ 
*Please note that a student will move through the curriculum at their own pace.  Most students take several monthly sessions to complete all 12 of the Foundation in Sounds lessons.
