Miniature gardens, like fairy gardens, are mesmerizing because of their intricate details and whimsy nature of them. In this 2 day workshop style class, students will learn about different ideas and options for creating unique fairy gardens using a various of containers, like terra cotta pots, recycled buckets and even recyclable shopping bags. I am extremely enthusiastic about anything related to the garden and use every opportunity to not only encourage but educate about plants and gardening. Miniature gardens Videos, pictures and hands-on demonstrations will be used to talk about the different garden plants that work best in a miniature garden setting. The first class will focus on imagination, creation and design. We will work together to create an imaginary world and think about what the fairy garden should look like. We'll learn basic landscape design techniques. While the design will be for a miniature garden, the concepts translate to larger garden areas too. Once the design is completed, the class will focus on different types of plants the can be used in a miniature garden. Students will have time to artistically decorate containers with paints, markers, or other art materials to fit their chosen theme. The containers will have overnight to dry before the second class. The next day's class will be hands-on planting. The basics of planting in containers will be shown and a discussion of different potting soil options will be shared. We will then plant out the fairy gardens and decorate with accessories. While we are planting I will share tips for miniature garden care and placement. At the end of the class, students will have the opportunity to show the fairy garden they created, whether it was created live or on paper.

If terra cotta pots are used as a container, students may want to break a couple pieces off to add dimension to the fairy garden and will need to have safety goggles and equipment to do it safely. Depending on ability of children, adult helpers may be needed.

Enthusiastic mom of 2 kids, Lisa Ely first learned to garden from her dad in their backyard when she was 6. Ever since there has not been a pile of dirt that she didn’t want to get her hands in.
Lisa is creator of Learn, Giggle & Grow Garden Curriculum and the co-author of three books under the Kinder Gardens umbrella. She is currently working on her next book series and a multi-media, adventure gardening experience for families to learn more and be inspired every day.
Prior to launching her children’s and family gardening enterprise, Lisa traveled the world over and over as an award-winning non-fiction TV producer and director. Some of her credits, like CBSs The Amazing Race, Discovery’s Garden Police and a number of shows on HGTV (including the Rose Parade) have helped her learn more about her garden passion.
Lisa’s always been described as a big kid and it wasn’t until she had kids that people stopped looking at her a bit funny when she would start a mud ball fight or run through the sprinklers. She admits that she’s good at playing because she’s had years of practice! She lives by her new family motto of “We’re washable!”
Lisa loves being in front of group sharing her love of everything fun in the garden. Some of her favorite classes are focused on worm science, eating the rainbow, tomato talk, soil on the move and root, stems, oh my!
When she’s not gardening she’s often with her husband watching their kids play baseball, paddling a dragon boat or playing her own version of “Chopped” to get a nightly dinner on the table!
