This class has NO LIVE SESSIONS. Instruction will be posted via short videos on each letter in the classroom. Separate videos will be posted for each letter and on blending letters into words each week.

The teacher will post prompts for students to post responses each week in the classroom. Students can respond by posting short videos of themselves giving words that begin with the week’s target letters. Students will be asked to post pictures of their white boards following each video lesson. Students will interact with one another by commenting on one another’s work, and by coming up with words to share that begin with the week’s target letters. 

Learning to read is not naturally developed like walking and talking. It needs to be explicitly taught by methods that will reach all types of learners. In this course students will gain mastery through explicit multi sensory instruction, seeing, saying, writing along in class.  Each class we will sing the sounds of the alphabet and most common digraphs. Students will have a print out of the letters with pictures to point to and follow along, and look back to as we identify sounds in words. The instruction will focus heavily on the sounds the letters make and blending those into real and nonsense words. Letter names can be deceptive and confusing to a beginning reader. This course will stick with short vowel sounds and the most common pronunciation of the letters. The next class “Ready to Read“ will continue on to phonetically teach sight words, and other unusually spelled words. 

Each week videos will be posted on: 
1. Review previous weeks letters and words. 
3. Introduce letters one at a time. 
4. Writing letters together while making their associated sounds. 
5. Students will then segment and writing words using their new letters, and previously learned letters. The segmenting will help build phonemic awareness skills that are critical for blending words and fluent reading. 
6. Students will fluently read the words we wrote that day. 


Week 1- We will learn to write and blend letters c, m, a, t. 

Week 3- new letters will be s, f, r, n. 

Week 4- new letters will be h, l, e, b. 

Week 5- new letter will be i, j, d, g. 

Week 6- new letters will be o, k, p, 

Week 7- new letters will be q, u, x. 

Week 8- new letters will be v, w, y, z. 

Week 9- will practice with ay, ee, igh. 

Week 10- will practice with oa, oo, ou. 

Week 11- ow, ar, ir, or. 

Week 11- ch, th, sh, ng. 

Week 12- putting it all together 

Work pages will be posted for further practice each week. I recommend introducing your child to phonetic readers such as the “Bob Books” by week 8.

學習目標

This is not your typical "have fun playing with your ABCs" class. We will have fun, but my goal is to prepare students to read independently. A student with a strong understanding of the alphabetic code will begin their reading journey on a solid foundation. A student joining this class should be able to sing their ABCs, and write their name.
