This class will start with a slide presentation about how hands are constructed. We will look at examples of hands in cartooning and discuss the differences. We will also talk about how hands can differ by gender and age. I will show how one can simplify the hand down to shapes that are easier to draw. Finally, we will look at common uses for the hand in cartooning and do some in-class exercises. These exercises will explore lessons learned in the class including simplifying the hand and drawing hands doing common actions.

Hands can be complicated and intimidating to draw. I will show the student how to streamline the process to make it less difficult. Students will learn how hands can differ depending on the type of character you are drawing. Also, students will see how the human hand is used in every-day tasks. We will learn, and do exercises, that allow the student to practice how the hand can hold and grab various objects and perform activities. These in-class exercises will be shared during class and discussed.
