We will follow a young character idea of "Tad" as he starts his own new job and takes over expenditure responsibilities. By design, over 100 mixed consumer math skills and definitions will be experienced throughout this course. For instance, Tad's new job will help him pay his bills such as cell phone and car insurance, and help him determine opportunity costs that he may not be able to afford. "Tad" will go out to eat and consider an appropriate tip percentages and tax, buy clothing and school supplies, write checks, choose a reliable car, and will train for his job. "Tad" will have to maintain his car with the unexpected repairs and oil changes. He will budget and choose different entertainment expenses. Over time, your learner will realize various real-life expenditures that a job will help to fund, and the difference between needs and wants that can be supported or not supported based on inflow and outflow. Your learner will learn how to manage daily expenses and what to consider in making a budget work.

The class is set up as straightforward word problem scenarios, and is a consumer math application class. We will be doing calculations throughout the class; there is no entertainment component except the idea of a real life application of a student learning to transition into personal responsibility.

Calculators are encouraged in this class for your learner so the flow of the class is efficient. Your learner should be proficient in the operations and our focus concerns multiple calculations to learn processes.

I have had students in the public and private school setting K-12 for over 25 years. I was an elementary public school teacher for 1st and 3rd grades for several years. I then taught 4th and 5th grades in private school for over a decade. I homeschooled my own children for several years through a local hybrid school. Currently, my time is spent in the private school setting teaching mathematics to middle and high school students, 7-12. I hold a current Master of Arts in Education degree from a large university in the state of Missouri. I also hold a BA in Business Management from the same university, and worked as an accountant in civil service for the US Army on base. I enjoy teaching the business side of math, and have integrated several real world scenarios into my class that students can maneuver well.
