If writing the college application or scholarship essay is weighing on you, and you don't know how to get started, this class is for you. The instructor guides them along the process, giving feedback and encouragement along the way. Price also includes continued editing and feedback from the instructor beyond the conclusion of class until the essay is polished and ready to send! ❶ The biggest struggle students have with the college essay is getting started! The best way to do that is to take this class or the live version (linked here). These two classes build a foundation, and we will make great progress here! https://outschool.com/classes/college-application-essays-a-workshop-to-get-it-done-swgVVYSv?usid=0BAnv5zn&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link ❷ The next problem a student has is developing the idea and fleshing it out as a personal narrative. To do this, they will communicate back and forth with Mrs. Lemons by email. If they need a 1-1 Zoom with Mrs. Lemons, this is available separately (linked below). She will discuss options, ask many questions, and push students to generate ideas and come up with a plan. It is awesome to see students get over this massive hurdle! To meet 1-1 or with a small group of students, send in a request here: https://outschool.com/classes/college-application-essays-individualized-or-small-group-support-dxTms3oE?usid=0BAnv5zn&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link ❸ After that, students need help with revisions and edits. We can do this over email for as long as they need (included free with the cost of this class), or we can meet live again. Included in the price of all our college essay classes is unlimited, ongoing email support! ❹ Once that's done, it's time to fine-tune and add some wow factor to the essay. For example, students may need help with descriptive writing, figurative language, blending narrative elements, and crafting sentences that stand out from almost all other high school writers. In this FLEX class, students get to see multiple sample essays written by students like them who took this class! They are inspired by what other students like them have done! They have video instruction, exercises to generate ideas, help planning and organizing the essay, feedback on drafts, and even a little inspiration from Hollywood. 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝟭: 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩 𝐚 𝐓𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜 Learn what colleges and universities look for in college essays. Students begin brainstorming their essay's topic, audience expectations, and how their strengths fit their prospective school. Students develop a topic idea to illustrate those character traits in a story that is narrow, appropriate, and engaging. They go through a 1-2 hour exercise just to develop a story idea! This week includes guidance through a writing guide with video teaching, brainstorming, and two sample essays. They send their ideas to the teacher, who gives feedback. 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝟮: 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬? 𝐒𝐨-𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭? The instructor inspires them to think deeply about who they are and the significance of their essay's topic. They watch video teaching, read two sample essays, and have a little Hollywood inspiration to go deeper into their topic for its significance. Students complete more exercises to get them thinking deeper. They send their organizational plan to the teacher, who gives feedback. 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝟯: 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲! This is an "ah-ha" module! Students finally start to understand how to be transparent and authentic and to communicate the significance of their experience. Again, they see on film how to go deeper, read a sample essay, and have video teaching how to make their essays memorable. They finally draft their essays now that they've done the deep thinking and planning. They communicate with their teacher, who gives feedback on their organization, and they finally start drafting. 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝟰: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, & 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐬- 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐰 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫! Now that they have a draft, they learn how to write a conclusion that brings closure, satisfaction, and an emotional connection with their reader. When complete, they revise and edit their essays for sentence fluency. They learn some simple tricks to use in the revision process to make their sentence structure stand out from the rest. Students will share their final drafts with their instructor, who will continue to help edit beyond the conclusion of this class until they have one polished essay, ready to send! This may extend for weeks. This unlimited, ongoing support is free of charge.
