𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬?

As students work through middle school and high school, we want them to be independent and successful in managing their lives: how they plan and spend their time, keep track of homework, organize long-term school projects, complete chores and other family responsibilities, and participate in sports and extra-curricular activities without losing their minds. It's a lot to manage!

🧐 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤?

This class, which is a weekly check-in, will be the accountability and support students need as they manage their busy schedules. Students receive individual support in planning their time while learning how to eventually do all of this independently. For example, if students have a science project to complete, we will teach them to read all the instructions, look at due dates, and how to use their calendar or planner to schedule their science work around their sports schedule and other homework assignments. In each class, the instructor asks students to look ahead at their weekly calendar (paper, ical, or Google calendar). Then they update their weekly agenda that has a daily checklist of things to do. When they're done with that, they check their grades and deal with anything that may be wrong. Maybe they need to email the teacher, or finish a missing assignment, etc. When this is complete, we discuss an aspect of intentional living. Some weeks we will talk about how their living spaces are organized and they'll plan to organize their closet, bathroom, or desk. Some weeks we will talk about important people in their lives and how to make intentional time for those relationships. In other weeks, we will talk about habits and how to avoid bad habits like procrastination and develop better habits. We talk about habit-bundling to get things done we don't like to do. We accomplish a lot in a short period of time. The chatbox is used extensively, so the instructor can have conversations with multiple students at the same time.

𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬--The back-and-forth work between a student and teacher significantly benefits a student if done well. We follow best practices in designing class time, assignments, and routines. According to Pennington Publishing, effective writing feedback (or grading) is:
• Specific, not general
• Immediate, not postponed
• Routine with a revision / feedback cycle
• Explanatory
• The right amount
• Targeted to the most critical issues
• Varied (written, audio, and video comments)
• Holding students accountable

❤️ They love their students and value each of their unique strengths and personalities that make our classes special. Our classes can be described as fun, personal, academic, challenging, and supportive.
🤩 We work to keep learners engaged, so there is always a degree of student accountability for their attention and focus, whether that be through asking them direct questions or by using the chatbox.
💭 We know all kids can learn, but sometimes things are hard! To support students, we teach them how to develop effective thinking and learning habits that will bring them success in class and in life.
🌟 Building relationships with students so they know we care about them helps us balance the high expectations we have for them regarding their effort, work quality, and behavior. Our students are encouraged, cared for, and they achieve!
