In this book club class, we are focusing on making reading fun! Each class, students will listen to the teacher reading New York Times Bestseller "The Wild Robot" by Peter Brown. This beautiful novel has wonderful illustrations and addresses many interesting themes including; survival, the role of animals in an ecosystem, and the meaning of what makes a family. The novel is written in short and engaging chapters that capture the imagination and wonder of readers.

In each class (6 classes in total - 2 classes per week, over the course of three weeks), the teacher will read designated chapters of the book and students will participate in discussions about the readings. In the first three classes, there will be a "STEM connection" where we will delve further into the scientific connections made in the novel.

There are also 'tasks' that students can do for further learning after the class is over. This is not meant to be homework. It is meant to help students bring their learning into their own environment and get them thinking of the themes discussed in class.

In the final class, students will participate in a creative writing activity where they get to write their own ending to the novel. After the final class is completed, students will get a personalized certificate to celebrate their learning from the book club class.

其他詳情

父母的引導和規範
The novel does address death, which is connected to the theme of wilderness survival for animals and food webs. Discussions on this topic will be approached with sensitivity and care. This novel is recommended for ages 8 and up by parents and teachers, which is why the age range for this class is for students 9-12.
供應清單
For the final class, we will be doing a creative writing activity. If students can bring writing utensils (paper, pen, etc.) and paper that would be great. Students can also use technology of their choice for writing, and can also use visual or auditory technology if that is more comfortable for them. We want everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy the creative writing process!

*Book is NOT required, it will be provided virtually to students during class time

Hello Everyone!

My name is Ms. Simon and I am a certified teacher in Ontario! I completed my Bachelor of Education Degree (for teaching), and my Undergraduate Degree in English & Psychology. I am also currently working on my Masters of Education. I currently work for a school board as a supply teacher.

I love teaching students of all ages about wildlife and nature, and I have experience working as an outdoor and wildlife educator. I also love teaching students reading and writing skills. I have a passion for music and the arts, and play piano, guitar, and sing.

I believe that education should be engaging, interesting, and hands-on. I have worked with a variety of students with various needs and backgrounds, and I find that experiential learning is the best way for children of all ages to learn. At the end of the day, learning should be fun!

As a fun fact about myself, I have two pet rabbits named Cookie and Waffles. They are both very sweet and have been wonderful companions for multiple years.

I look forward to learning with you! :)
