Before Rosa Parks, there was Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old who demonstrated remarkable bravely refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a city bus. Despite her important role in desegregating city transportation, she remains overshadowed and lesser-known in history. It is important that her story is told, so we can all develop a deeper appreciation for her role in fighting for equality. 

In this class, students will learn about Claudette Colvin's remarkable story and her impact on the civil rights movement. We will discuss the challenges she faced after her courageous stand, including community backlash and its effect on her personal life. Students will learn about her early life and activism, and we will talk about the significance of Colvin's actions in challenging racial segregation. By the end of the course, students will gain an understanding of Claudette Colvin's deserving recognition for her efforts in helping to end racial segregation.

Classes may occasionally run slightly longer than 30 minutes to ensure each student has a chance to speak if they wish.
