課堂經歷

Using techniques adapted from Jeff Anderson's book Everyday Editing, students will improve their writing by engaging in inquiry about how sentences work. Then using exemplars, students will practice imitating a range of effective sentence structures, drawing on their own interests for composition.

Each session will scaffold off the next, ensuring that practice and review is strategic. By the end of the three week course, students will have composed paragraphs that demonstrate a command of sentence structures.

Example session:  Teacher and students will read examples of engaging and high-interest prose together. Students will observe sequences of engaging sentences organized around specific grammar rules, then the instructor will lead a discussion of what they notice. Students will then practice imitating the sentences, learning the rules about how and why they function.

HW: Practice applying the previous lesson(s) via a choice of practice assignments provided by the instructor in a shared Google Drive folder.

This is not an approach for parents concerned with their students learning the technical intricacies of grammar; it's more of a holistic approach designed for students to learn to enjoy writing, to begin noticing things as readers, and, of course, to improve their craft.

After trying out various methods of teaching grammar over thirteen years in the classroom, this approach seemed to stick with kids!

In general, I love teaching writing, from figuring out how to craft an excellent sentence to organizing more advanced essays. And young writers who begin to have a command of how to create their own authentic writing voice
