This course explores the structure and dynamics of the American government, providing a broad-based introduction to the ideas and institutions that shape politics in the contemporary United States. Students will develop critical thinking skills while debating a piece of legislation, analyzing a political cartoon, and discussing current events. My goal is for students to see how politics and government apply and relate to their lives through hands-on activities like writing a politician, discovering regulations, and forming their party. In class, we cover the founding of America, the Constitution, branches of government, landmark Supreme Court cases, political parties, and polling. This course aims to help each class member arrive at a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of the forces that shape the American government and politics. This fast-paced class requires at least 3-4 hours of homework per week if your student plans to take the CLEP. Homework should be 1-2 hours per week if they are not taking the CLEP and usually includes some combination of videos, written assignments, or research. A grade report is provided if requested BEFORE class begins. Week One & Week Two - American Foundations/Constitutional Convention Week One Homework - Constitutional Convention Simulation Week Two Homework - Research and find Who Represents You from the local to the federal level. CLEP (College Level Examination Program) is a test that you would register for and take after the class is complete. There is an additional cost for the test, but I will provide information about possible vouchers. If the student receives a passing grade on the test, they will be eligible for college credit at MANY (not all) universities. The course will cover the five areas in the exam, but more studying is recommended if taking the test. The instructor will provide suggestions for studying and additional resources.
