This lesson teaches students about a literary device known as a foil character. Students will understand this device, be able to identify it in literature, and explain how and why it works.

After having finished reading the book, students will do a comprehension check for understanding.

Theme
Students will identify the theme in the story and support their analysis in their writing using details from the text.

Lesson 7
Extended Writing
Students will learn the elements of a strong analytical essay and put it into practice. They will formulate a thesis statement and outline.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Extended Writing
Students will use their thesis and outline from Lesson 7 to write a 5 paragraph essay.
