In this class we explore existing functional space stations and discuss how space technology evolved. We then examine pictures of futuristic designs of space stations in films and games and look at the amenities necessary for astronauts to spend a long time in space. We will draw a map of a three-level space station and consider what functions we need to include in our design. Your learner will think through design choices, deciding if the station is floating or stationed on a planet, and what essential criteria these options require. We will discuss visual solutions on how to best represent our individual ideas on the map, for example through scale, colour coding or compass coordinates. 

This class provides an imaginative framework for your child to explore the world around them and learn graphic ways of representing their spatial ideas. Through the activity of drawing maps your child learns to solve problems and to present ideas and solutions graphically. They will pick up map reading skills but the focus is on exploring visual representations of a specific space. 

At the end of the class we will look at the design of our space station and explain its functionality.
