In this class we explore underground structures, such as mines, ancient tunnels and hidden cities, that were created in history and we discuss why they were built, and how they functioned. We look at specific features, such as water wells and traps, included in some underground structures and why they are useful.  We examine different graphic options to represent depth and layers. Everyone will then design their own underground living structure which includes essential features such as air shafts, storage and emergency exits. We will draw and discuss visual solutions on how to best represent our ideas, for example through scale, colour coding or compass coordinates.

This class provides an imaginative framework to explore the world around us and learn graphic ways of representing spatial ideas. Through the activity of drawing maps you learn to solve problems and present ideas and solutions graphically. You will pick up map reading skills but the focus is on exploring visual representations of a specific space. 

At the end of the class we will look at our work and share how our underground city functions.
