Welcome to the ultimate Juneteenth celebration! Join Mrs. Morgan for this one time course about the origins, importance, and cultural impact of 'Freedom Day'. The course goes beyond the basics and equips learners with a multifaceted view of the ever important day of remembrance. During this 55-minute class, students will learn about: - Vocabulary & Geography ("The Black Belt"/Black South) - The Complete History of Juneteenth (Emancipation Proclamation, General Order No. 3, etc.) - Part & Modern Cultural Symbolism (Hymnals, Art, Food, etc.) & Celebrations - Juneteenth in Popular Culture - Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday - "The Mother of Juneteenth": Opal Lee and more! This course also focuses heavily on how Juneteenth celebrations have progressed across time, looking closely at how the holiday is honored and celebrated in the "Black Belt"/Black South. Although the holiday is celebrated nationally, it is a uniquely southern experience that has created Juneteenth as we know it. All in all, students will receive a well researched and organized retelling of Juneteenth history before we end our time together by planning a mock Juneteenth celebration that synthesizes our class learning. At that point, we will consider various questions such as: What dishes will you serve? What songs will you play? What does honor and memory look like for formerly enslaved ancestors. *Course content suitable for ages 9-18! * A 20-page handout will be shared after class to encourage continued learning.
