HOW TO READ CRITICALLY AND ACTIVELY

Sure, you may know how to read well, but do you know how to read critically and actively? Learning to read a text (be it an essay, an article, a short story, a novel, or a poem) critically and actively can help us better understand what we read, how we read, and why we read, allowing us to use that information in our own writing and thinking.

So often we read simply to be done with the task, but in doing so, we leave so much on the table. In this course, we will spend three weeks learning 1) why we read, 2) how we can read better, and 3) how we can apply these skills to become better overall learners. We will start by reading informational texts (articles about science or current events or news stories) in Week 1. In Week 2, we will turn our attention to short stories. And finally, in Week 3, we’ll combine what we’ve learned in the previous two weeks and create an “active reading journal” that will help prepare your student for independent critical and active reading.

This course is for grades 8-12.
