Week 1Lesson 1Week 1: Lesson 1- Introduction to directional terms, plans, and essentialsIntroduction to the body systems. In this lesson we will learn about the different cells and tissues of the body, as well as various systems of the body, essentials to life, directional terms, planes of the body and common prefixes/suffixes that are used in the scientific field. In this class we will have notes via powerpoint, vocabulary card practice, and interactive activitiesLesson 2Week 1: Lab 1- pickle labStudents will be asked to model various directional terms and movements of the body, and finally students will be able to play a virtual exploratory lab with a pickle dissection alternatives to a pickle can be a banana or other oblong fruit/vegetables.Week 2Lesson 3Week 2: Lesson 2- Integumentary SystemStudents will learn about the dermis, hypodermic, and dermal layers of the skin, parts of the hair, and parts of the nails. Students will learn about the nerves, glands, and receptors in the skin. Finally, they will learn the special functions of the skin and methods used to maintain homeostasisLesson 4Week 2: Lab 2- Fingerprint and Receptors LabStudents will test their mechanoreceptors and thermoreceptors of their skin. Additionally, students will practice interactive labeling of the layers of the skin. We will explore the microscope views of various tissues and cells. Finally, students will explore their fingerprints using a balloon and washable marker, explore hair structure, nail structure and sweat gland distribution.Week 3Lesson 5Week 3: Lesson 3-Skeletal SystemThe skeletal system will be explored in two categories, Axial and Appendicular, we will practice understanding the structure, development, and distribution of bones in the body. We will practice naming and locating the bonesLesson 6Week 3: Lab 3- Bone Integrity LabThis class will be a virtual lab where students will practice naming the bones, and then they can conduct the optional hands-on lab to test the strength of the bone using paper and books.Week 4Lesson 7Week 4: Lesson 4- Muscular SystemStudents will learn the essential sliding filament movement models and structures of the three muscle types. We will then learn how to name muscles, and the body movements the muscles can make.Lesson 8Week 4: Lab 4- Muscle Fatigue LabMuscle fatigue lab will be testing their strength and reflexes. Students will stand in a door frame, hold a book, do seated movements with their eyes closed, and use cold water to test their muscle speed and fatigue. Then students will practice interactive labeling and activities for muscle names and movements.Week 5Lesson 9Week 5: Lesson 5- Cardiovascular SystemStudents will learn the anatomy and physiology of the heart (including the chambers and valves), blood, blood vessels, veins, arteries and cardiac muscle.Lesson 10Week 5: Lab 5- Blood Flow and Pulse Rate LabStudents will trace the blood flow throughout the body interactive activity. They will also play an interactive activity to label the veins, arteries, blood vessels, heart, atrium, ventricles, valves and more. Finally, students will conduct a heart rate exercise lab.Week 6Lesson 11Week 6: Lesson 6- Respiratory SystemStudents will learn about the nasal cavity, sinuses, mouth, pharynx, larynx, lungs, bronchi, alveoli, and gas exchange. We will analyze the structure and functions of the lungs.Lesson 12Week 6: Lab 6- Lung Capacity LabStudents will do a breathing rate exercise lab, counting breath rate seats, standing, after walking and moving quickly. Students will use a balloon to help model expansion and exhalation of the lungs. Students will then do interactive activities to label the lungs, bronchi, larynx, epiglottis, and more.Week 7Lesson 13Week 7: Lesson 7- Digestive SystemGo over all of the organs involved in the digestive system and identify the function of each. Name the teeth, mouth, esophagus, liver, stomach, gallbladder, small intestine, colon, rectum and anus. Discuss diseases and disorders that the digestive system can experience.Lesson 14Week 7: Lab 7_ Digestive System Journey LabDigestion in a bag lab. A large zip ziploc bag, water, food coloring, panty hose, large bowl, and a spoon.Week 8Lesson 15Week 8: Lesson 8- Excretory SystemLearn the structure and functions of the following organs: kidneys (primary excretory organ), ureters, bladder, and urethra. We will discuss the functions of the excretory system including: remove nitrogenous waste product of protein metabolism and other harmful substances, eliminates them in the form of ammonia, uric acid or urea, eliminates controlled amounts of water and salts to maintain the internal environment, is to maintain homeostasis of blood (excrete wastes, absorb nutrients, etc.)Lesson 16Week 8: Lab 8- Virtual Urine Analysis Labvirtual urinalysis lab interactive, teacher modeled "urine" case studies to analyze, practice games, and labeling activityWeek 9Lesson 17Week 9: Lesson 9- Nervous Systemin this lesson students will learn the location, structure and function of the parts of the brain. Name the four lobes- Frontal Lobe, Occipital Lobe, Parietal Lobe, Temporal Lobe. Name the right and left side of the brain. Identify the Cerebral Cortex, Cerebellum, Hypothalamus, Limbic System, Brain Stem and Basal GangliaLesson 18Week 9: Lab 9- Virtual Neuron Firing LabThis is a virtual lab that allows students to explore a 3d model of the brain, labeling games and activities to practice the structure and functions. The optional activity is constructing a paper brain helmet to color and label. We will also play some brain game teasers.

I highly recommend taking Biology prior to anatomy. This is due to understanding bodily homeostasis, passive transport, active transport, parts of the cells, and understanding genetics.

Note about curriculum------------ Is this a full year course? I would say it can be built to be one,, but not entirely as a stand alone.. This class covers a majority of the curriculum for High School Anatomy and Physiology. Topics not covered - reproductive system, lymphatic system and endocrine system in complete detail, these are just introduced in lesson 1 as body systems. This class also does not go into much detail about the special senses. We touch on the topic but we do not go into specifics. I do offer separate one time courses for the special senses but I do not currently have listings for reproductive, lymphatic, and endocrine systems. I do offer the material for these lessons but they are not live lessons. I am happy to grade practice and homework if students want to do independent study on these. Note about labs--------------------- The lab that is optional for the circulatory system is a blood kit students can purchase on Amazon and use to test their blood at home. This would be using their own blood and they would prick their finger with a lancelot *this is not painful at all*. Again, this is optional, students will not be required to do this, but if they want to I will guide then without showing my finger bleeding on the screen.
