This interactive, multi-day class will meet each week to learn and discuss a famous horse that has impacted the world. This might include its influence on society/culture, government, farming/ranching, transportation/exploration, competition/sports, and film/entertainment. (The goal is that each horse selected for a class will either have a movie, book, or short story written about them.  This way, students can continue learning more about the famous horse after class ends, if interested.)  

Here are the famous horses to be discussed (with resources shared for optional extended learning):

Session One:  Sergeant Reckless (Marines)
Session Two: Sea Biscuit (Thoroughbred)
Session Three:  King (American Quarter Horse)
Session Four: Godolphin Arabian (Sham)
Session Five: Bucephalus (Akhal Teke)
Optional:  Figure (Justin Morgan)
Optional: Pluto (Lipizzaner)
Optional: Black Jack (Caisson)

Each class will be structured with a short review of previous horse.  Each session’s special horse will then be introduced, geography with mapping and social studies (discussing horse's influence on history), and science as we discuss the horse's breed/type/performance.  We will allow time for discussion, incorporating slides, photos, and video clips (if possible.) 

Students will also learn some equine science each class as we discuss the selected horse's breed/type, color, size, and performance with the possibility of using a live horse for explanation (weather-permitting). Class time will also include discussion of social studies and geography in relation to the famous horse with mapping skills.  This is a fantastic class for students interested in interacting with the teacher and other students through discussion and study guide activity.  

There is no required horse experience for this course, just a love to learn more about them and their impact on our world.

Study guide will be provided prior to for each class. A writing utensil and crayons/colored pencils will be helpful.

Hello everyone!  I am so glad you decided to learn a little bit about me. My teaching philosophy focuses on giving students an opportunity to learn so they can thrive, not merely survive.  I believe each student has talents if we allow them to learn using their unique intelligences.  I develop content that aligns with real-world situations and connects across content areas to paint a beautiful tapestry of how learning can be fun and engaging!  

I am a lifelong educator with 25+ years experience in K-12 education and post-secondary education (public, private, online, homeschool) as a teacher, coach, administrator, undergraduate and graduate-level college professor, published author, researcher/presenter, and most importantly, mom.  I hold a bachelors degree in English-Secondary Education, a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. 

As the parent of two amazing children, (now almost adults), we love the world outdoors!  We are blessed to have our own farm where we bred and raised Appaloosa horses for several years and spent several years showing English. We now successfully compete in western events, including reining, reined cowhorse, and ranch riding.  I love reading and writing...and well, anything where I can keep learning!
