Take an idea from your imagination and onto the page! Students can expect to experience a similar class flow to the below: -Inspirational Offering: to get the writers’ imaginations activated -Writing Prompts: to give learners a jumping off place -Writing Time: to practice finding their voice and their craft -Sharing: to have an opportunity to experience being witnessed and have their writing be received by others -Reflections and Community Connections: to provide time to integrate the experiences from time together and to collectively create future prompts or topics The entire class experience will include multi-sensory and multi-disciplinary components to encourage each learner’s creative process. As a teacher, Mara engages in interactive styles with open-ended questions and inviting inquiry and input from learners to engage with each other in dialogue. No previous creative writing experience is required. All types of writing are welcome, especially poems, prose, short plays, full-length plays, short musicals or original music, and/or full-length musicals.

It is my intention to support learners’ growth through affirmation of their LGBTQ+ identity using the medium of creative writing, creating an environment that I as a queer woman, would feel brave, safe, and creative in. Allies are welcome in this class, with priority on making space for students that may not get the opportunity to be self-expressed through creative writing in other areas of their life.

Learners are encouraged to bring any supplies for writing whether physical materials such as pen, pencil, and journals/notebooks or be prepared with an digital document.

Mara has worked with students ages 5 through 18, in a variety of in-school, after-school, and summer camp settings. Over the past 10 years, she has worked with and currently works with regional and local arts organizations as a teaching artist. These classes have included introduction to acting, introduction to musical theater, introduction to playwriting, and introduction to improvisation. She is an ally to any LGBTQ+ identifying learners, and creates a brave space where learners can be fully themselves.
