I've got two words for you, "artificial intelligence". So, you'll note that this class is a social studies class, not a coding class. This point is vitally important because A.I., like many other technologies, will shape everything about our society in the future. How will this tech change education? Jobs? Income? Life? Families? Our class will follow the format that I like to call informed discussion. Learners will be expected to pay attention to developments in the technology and the...
Learners will become more aware of this technology and learn how to use various sources to stay informed. Learners will also learn how to consider the effects on society and how to discuss their thoughts and feelings on the topic.
Our class will focus on the past, present and future of A.I. and other major computing innovations in the U.S. My education includes a B.A. in History from Hampton University as well as an M.A.(ABT) from Southern Methodist University. Please see my bio for more about me, or send me a note.

I have seen that the potential of A.I. can be overwhelming, unsettling and even scary for some adults and teens. This is actually what inspired this class, as I have found that fact-based conversations that allow space for voicing concerns. As I spend hours each week with teens discussing difficult topics I am able to lean on my experiences as a classroom and then online teacher as well as my continued study of adolescent development. Please know that this class is likely to surface anxiety and concern because the future is so uncertain. With that in mind I am arming our teens with knowledge and debunking myths, but parents should be ready to continue conversations at home as well.
Our class will follow the format that I like to call informed discussion. Learners will be expected to pay attention to developments in the technology and the effects in society. We will do this together by sharing articles from respected sources such as U.S. and state government agencies, polling organizations such a Pew Foundation, and news media outlets such as Associated Press, Reuters, The New York Times, PBS, and publications of top research universities. I also find that industry websites are useful- such at professional organizations or employment companies.
