In this class, we will study folk tales and legends behind the historic winter traditions. We will talk about the history of Yule and Imbolc of pagan Europe, Saturnalia of the Roman Empire, and Koliada of Slavic tradition. Students will learn about New Year's Eve and New Year's Day traditions, including Hogmanay in Scotland. We will even hear about winter-time stories like the original tale that inspired Disney's Frozen! This is a stand-alone class and no previous knowledge or work is necessary.

Students will come away from this class with an understanding of how these stories from around the world have shaped some of our modern traditions.

Since many winter traditions and festivals are derived from religious practices and beliefs, we will discuss how belief systems can help shape culture. This will include some ancient pagan beliefs (i.e. Yule and Imbolc) and Christianity (and how ancient holidays turned into some of the modern Christian ones).
