***MATERNITY LEAVE: I will be taking time off for maternity leave beginning in January. At this time, I plan to resume classes in April. I will update any changes here. I hope to see your learners back in class to talk all about mythology and fairy tales soon! :) *** In this class, we will study the history and mythology and legends of Scotland and gain all the benefits of travel from the comfort of our own homes. Students in this class will learn facts about history and culture through the lens of popular myths and legends. Your child will learn to apply concepts from the core subjects of social studies, history, and literature. At the end of the lesson, we will develop critical thinking skills by discussing which character, story, or creature each student found most interesting and why, followed by an analysis of what each character or creature tells us about the country, the people who live there, and those who lived there many centuries ago. We will start with a brief overview of Scotland's history, concentrating on important events that have shaped the people and society. Next, we will look at popular stories that define their culture and traditions. We will focus on the locations of each of these stories and their lasting importance in the cultural identity of Scotland. We close with students sharing and discussing their favorite story or figure from that week. This is a stand-alone class and no previous knowledge or work is necessary. Students will receive a printable "Story Explorer" passport and a stamp for Ireland. They can collect more "Story Explorer" passport stamps by signing up for additional "Story Explorer" classes!

Since we will be discussing topics like history, mythology, and folklore, there is the occasional mention of war, violence, and death. To understand Scottish mythology, we will learn about how the ancient and medieval people of Scotland believed in many gods and goddesses, magic, and mythological beings.
受講に必要なもの
Please be sure to print the Scotland stamp and one passport (pick the color of your choice - you only need one!). It is not necessary to have it assembled prior to class time, as this is just for fun. You can add your new stamp to your passport, and sign up for another "Story Explorer" class to collect more!

I have taught social studies and history as a tutor, substitute teacher, and homeschool teacher, and therefore have experience in covering sensitive topics that involve war/violence in a manner appropriate for children. As a part of my studies for my major in ancient and medieval history, I focused on the history of the British Isles, including Scotland. My senior thesis paper was on Scottish and Irish history and identity. I have studied Scottish mythology and storytelling and their link to Scottish culture.
