OPTIONAL: During our final class, students will be invited to share an imaginary dragon of their own making. They can combine elements of the dragons discussed in previous sessions or make up characteristics from scratch! Students who enjoy drawing may bring their illustration to share with the class, but they are also free to present their dragon by simply explaining the traits of their dragon in a short (1-2 minute) presentation. Please note that this is optional, and students will not be pressured to participate outside of their comfort level.

Most cultures in history have their own version of myths about serpent-like creatures that terrorized people. In this class, we will discuss several different myths about dragons from every corner of the world. The first four days will focus on dragon myths from specific continents. We will learn about different types of dragons from many different countries and cultures and how they relate to important values in that culture or specific time period. Learners will hear stories about some of the most famous dragons of ancient and medieval legend, as well as some lesser-known tales that deserve more attention. In the fifth session, we will also discuss dragons from literature, film, television and other pop culture and learners will have an opportunity to share a dragon of their own making! Students will learn to compare and contrast stories and characteristics of dragons across cultures and what we can learn about people from the mythical stories they tell.

Day 1: Europe

Day 2: Asia

Day 3: North and South America

Day 4: Africa and Oceania

Day 5: Dragons from Literature and Pop Culture / Discussion / Build Your Own Dragon

During Day 4, students will be invited to create their own mythical dragon to share with the class during Day 5. This is optional, and students are not required to present or prepare anything. Students who wish to present their own dragon may bring a drawing or deliver a short (1-2 minute) explanation of their dragon.

No previous knowledge is necessary, just an interest in dragons and a passion for myths and legends.

This class discusses dragons, death, and destruction. While learning about ancient and medieval myths about dragons, we will encounter stories that feature violence. This includes dragons who are killed by heroes and dragons who kill or attempt to kill humans. We will not go into more detail than necessary. For example, Heracles had to cut off all the Hydra's heads in order to defeat it. As in any class on mythology, some stories relate to ancient religions. This includes dragon gods and goddesses revered in the ancient world. We will address these beliefs from a scientific point of view.

***MATERNITY LEAVE: I will be taking time off for maternity leave beginning in January. At this time, I plan to resume classes in April. I will update any changes here. I hope to see your learners back in class to talk all about mythology and fairy tales soon! :) ***

Hi parents and learners! My name is Alexandra and I love stories of all kinds.

I offer classes that survey stories from all over the world, including mythology, folklore, fairy tales, legends, literature, and true history. My classes teach students how to interpret stories in their historical and cultural context. I believe that the best way to learn about history and different cultures is through the stories a country, tribe, or any group of people tell about themselves and pass down to their own children.

I earned my degree in history from the University of California, Riverside, with an emphasis on ancient and medieval history. I studied abroad at the University of Oxford as part of my undergraduate degree.

I have been working with students ages five to eighteen over the last ten years as a teacher’s assistant, substitute, one-on-one tutor, and homeschool teacher.

I look forward to seeing you in a class and sharing stories that matter!
